Indian
Association for the advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (IAAVP) is a
non-government, literary scientific organization of India established in 1986
for the promotion of the science of Veterinary Parasitology through the exchange of
research knowledge for providing better animal health coverage in order to
increase the production of livestock products for the speedy economic upliftment of
the farmers and registered under Section 21 of the Societies Registration Act
21 of 1860.
IAAVP is
established by a renowned veterinary parasitologist of India and has 823 active
life members from India and other countries. The organization is actively
involved in motivating the members for innovative research in the field of
veterinary parasitology, upgrading, updating the knowledge about the
identification of parasites, diagnosis, planning the strategies for their
control and its dissemination to the end-users for the benefit of society
particularly animal owners, farmers with the aim of doubling the income of farmers
for the last 25 years.
History of establishment
A meeting of the scientists interested in the
advancement of Veterinary Parasitology was held in the Guest House of Central
Drug Research Institute, Lucknow on 15.2.1986 at 11.30 A.M. to discuss the
establishment of “Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary
Parasitology”. The meeting was chaired by Dr. P. Rai, Professor &
Head Department of Veterinary Medicine, U.P. College of Veterinary Sciences and
Animal Husbandry, the then C.S.A. University of Agriculture and Technology,
Mathura, and attended by 35 senior Parasitologists from different parts of the
country. It was decided that a separate Association for the speedy and
focused development of Veterinary Parasitology

organized, so that the problems of specialized teaching, research, and
extension in the discipline gets proper representation at national and
international levels. The name of the Association suggested by Dr. P.S.
Srivastava, i.e., “Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary
Parasitology” was adopted unanimously. It was also decided that all those
scientists who are working in the field of animal Parasitology and related
disciplines will be accepted as members.
An ad-hoc
committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. B.N. Sahai, Dean,
Pos-Graduate Studies-cum-Director, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, Dr.
P.S. Srivastava, Professor & Head, Department of Parasitology, Bihar
Veterinary College, Patna, as Organizing Secretary along with fifteen senior
Parasitologists representing different regions of the country. They were
entrusted with the job of preparing draft Acts, Rules and Regulations of the
newly formed Association (IAAVP). It was also decided that the First Inaugural The symposium of IAAVP should be organized under the leadership of Prof.(Late) N.N.
Sharma, Head, Division of Parasitology at Indian Veterinary Research Institute,
Izatnagar. The association was thereafter registered in 1986 at
Patna.
The society has successfully organized 28 national
and 1 Asian congress of veterinary parasitology till 2018. The society also
offers various awards to motivate the young parasitologist and to felicitate
seniors for their lifetime achievements viz., JP Dubey young scientist award,
Best paper presentation award, national fellow, etc.
